Latin America and the Caribbean will have the first Entrepreneurship and Internet Center for the region in Paraguay

The Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers, known as ICANN, announces the opening of the first Center for Entrepreneurship and Internet in Latin America and the Caribbean – CEI LAC, which will be located in Asunción, Paraguay . It is a joint initiative with the National Secretariat of Information Technology and Communication of Paraguay (SENATICs), and the Association of High Level Domains of Latin America and the Caribbean (LACTLD).

The inauguration will take place on October 12. Its mission is to contribute to the evolution of the Internet ecosystem and to foster the creation of capabilities on the ecosystem of the Domain Name System (DNS) industry. Additional objectives include increasing knowledge on key issues, being a point of contact and exchange in which to acquire and share experiences, resources, training and support for the implementation of initiatives and projects in digital environments.

“We believe that this center represents an important milestone for Latin America and the Caribbean, which will allow new opportunities to achieve progress and the strengthening of the sector,” said Rodrigo De la Parra, Vice President of ICANN for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Recently from ICANN we developed a study to identify and define the strengths and weaknesses in the ecosystem of the industry in the region. It showed that despite the relatively high internet penetration, knowledge about domain names and the options available to them are very low. This initiative will help address these challenges, and lead to improvements in conditions and competitiveness. ”

The Center also plans to take an active role in promoting the expansion of the global program of High Level Generic Domains (gTLDs), which is enabling choice, competition and innovation. Internationalized domain names, which are a part of the Program, are also helping to enable a multilingual Internet.

To guide the implementation and strategies of the Center, an Advisory Committee formed by regional representatives of the Internet community has been created. It is integrated by Andrés Piazza (General Manager of LACTLD), Anthony Harris (Executive Director of CABASE), Ernesto Bojorquez (Commercial Director of, Gabriela Szlak and Celia Leman Friedman (eInstituto), Gonzalo Navarro (CEO of ALAI), León Sánchez (partner in Fulton & Fulton SC), Rubens Kuhl (Manager of and VandaScartezini (Polo Consultores Associados).
